1 Cor 15v3, “For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures.” (cf. 15 vs.1-4)
If the content of the Gospel consisted of many bricks that together made a solid wall, would it really be that bad if we lost or removed one or two bricks? Sure, there would be a hole or two in the wall, but the wall would still stand?
According to Paul, there are certain aspects of the Gospel which are essential to our salvation. In other words, certain aspects of Gospel Content are life and death issues and worth contending for (Phil 1:7, Jude 3).
From 1 Cor 15, we see at least 4 Aspects of the Gospel without which, there is NO Gospel:
- The Gospel is a Historical Event - “that Christ died, was buried, was raised on the 3rd day”. These Gospel facts are not to be messed with; God is the Gospel and He has acted in history to reconcile sinners to himself through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ!
- The Gospel was Planned - “according to the scriptures”. God was not surprised by the horrific deeds against his Son. In fact, sin, death, hell and Satan are not frustrations of God’s plan but fit into it. The events of the gospel were God’s doing, not historical turns of fate. Thus, God’s love and willingness to die for us deepens our certainty of God’s commitment to us in the gospel. (Acts 2:23, 4:27; 2 Tim 1:9)
- The Gospel was Absolutely Necessary - “Christ died for our sins”. Our sin was such that it required the death of God. We were not just wounded by sin, but by nature were dead in our sins, & needed to be resurrected (Eph 2:1-4; Rom 3:10-12, 8:8).
- The Gospel Accomplishes Salvation for those who believe - “...the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved”. The gospel is an objective accomplishment –the purchase of redemption for all who would believe. He bore our Sin (1 Pet 2:24; 2 Cor 5:21). Therefore, Christ took away the penalty of my sin by dying in my place (‘Penal Substitutionary Atonement’), thus securing the believers salvation on the cross. Salvation by grace alone in Christ alone is an objective work of God from beginning to end for those he came to save. (John 10:11; Rev 5:9; Heb 12:2) Christ is a sufficient saviour, and successful mediator! (Heb 9:14-15)
These aspects of the Gospel in my opinion are not negotiable, remove any one of them from the Gospel wall and it all comes tumbling down! May we be among those who faithfully contend for and advance this glorious Gospel of grace!
